Unfortunately I can't put my guy on a grass turnout - we are in dry So Cal...but I try at least to le him graze when I can.
Love your blog and lots of luck to you and Lucy.Brookehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00797204580374075566noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7503414269772613959.post-16406956862833373142011-09-07T17:23:39.699-04:002011-09-07T17:23:39.699-04:00Hi Brooke, thanks for your comment/question. Right...Hi Brooke, thanks for your comment/question. Right now she eats:

AM:
1 lb Poulin Fibre-Max grain (14% fat, 12% protein, low NSC grain). This stuff is GREAT for naturally hot blooded hard keepers who need the fat but don't need the energy.
1 cup black oil sunflower seeds
SmartPaks (TractGuard, SmartMare Balance, SmartLytes)

PM:
1 lb Poulin FibreMax
3 lbs alfalfa cubes

Her PM grain gets soaked with up to 2 gallons of water. She loves it and it's a great way to get extra water into her. The alfalfa is a natural defense against ulcers, which she has a history of, because of the high calcium level. They're kind of like Tums in hay form.

She eats an average of 20lbs of high quality 2nd cut Timothy hay a day, and she's on grass turnout.

She's certainly not cheap to feed, but she has blossomed since I treated her for her ulcers back in the Spring, and grass turnout has really helped also. She was on rice bran pellets for a while but I was able to cut those out, along with cutting her grain in half, when she started going on grass turnout.

If you're looking for a way to get more "cool" calories into your horse, check out canola oil. It has a much better Omega 3:6 ratio than corn oil and it's very high in fat.Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08707037151404133158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7503414269772613959.post-42696804966373412882011-09-07T14:44:40.379-04:002011-09-07T14:44:40.379-04:00Hi Kate,
