wasted space

I have to write about last night's hilarious adventures at the barn and I also have some video, but I can't download the video until tonight, so for now, here are two photos of what I would call "wasted space":

They are turf farms that I pass every day on my way to and from work. Rhode Island is a small state to begin with but I think most of the open space is taken up by these turf farms. Every time I drive past, I picture Lucy and I galloping across the fields, grass and dirt being tossed through the air with every stride and her mane whipping back at me.

But no, these fields produce sod that is harvested to re-do athletic fields and suburban back yards. What a waste! ;)

In case you're wondering, the bridge-like contraptions in the photos are what the farmers use to water such a vast area of grass.

  1. Hi! I came over from Ashley's The Process of Learning when she posted about your contest! I think I might try to do that tomorrow.. it's a tad bit too late for me to think of a story... haha

But I wanted to say that I think the SAME thing when I ride past the Sod farms here in middle GA. I actually did ride on an 'old' sod farm that was recently sold to one of my boyfriend's friends... and those waterers are HUGE! I never thought they were so big. And I think I might actually have pictures from that ride!

Anyways, I just wanted to stop and say hi! can't wait to read more about you and your mare! I'll have to go snoop around in the old posts! :) Happy Easter!

  4. I ride around a bunch of these and I long to gallop on that nice, flat grass. Can you imagine how much trouble I would get into? Ha.
