What can I say, my husband spoiled me when he bought my engagement ring. It is a beautiful solitaire, but it doesn't fit well under my riding gloves. My wedding ring is much flatter, but it sometimes pinches the skin on my finger under my gloves. If I go to the barn directly from my house, I simply take my rings off and leave them at home, but if I go directly from work, I take my rings off once I get to the barn before I tack up.
Usually I leave them in my brush box, but yesterday for some reason I absentmindedly left them on the corner of my closed trunk lid. Lucy, Cairo and I went out and had a lovely long trail ride and returned just before dusk. I turned her out in the grass paddock while I did some tack room organizing, including taking a towel and briskly wiping all of the dust off the top of my trunk. I forgot that my rings were sitting right on the edge of the trunk and in my cleaning frenzy, they were flung straight across the tack room, landing in the back corner under a little tack cart. I happily continued with the cleaning, not realizing what I had done until all the horses were in and fed, and it was time to go home. I realized I didn't have my rings on and went to get them out of my brush box, where I normally put them...except they weren't there. I couldn't remember where I had set them down so I spent the next 45 minutes frantically searching the entire barn. I still can't believe I found them because they were very well hidden.
Do you wear your rings when you ride? If not, where do you store them? A friend suggested I put them on my necklace if I'm wearing one, and that's certainly a better idea than leaving them out in the open unattended at the barn while I'm out gallivanting around the trails for hours!
I never wear my ring around horses, I've almost lost one of the diamonds out of the setting because of horses! That was all it took, so I either leave it home, or I take it off in the car, which is nice because then my ring is locked up in the car & I worry less about it!
ReplyDelete;) Also, I had my engagement & wedding bands fused together, so I don't get pinched or rubbed, it's nice!
Mine sounds similar in shape to yours, it's got 1 diamond that sticks up in the middle & catches on everything, then the wedding band is flat. :)

Oh jeez- so glad you found it. I can imagine the mini heart attack you must've had!
ReplyDeleteI still say, leave them in the car, in your cup holder or center console. :) That's what I used to do when I wore rings. If i rode in them, even if I had gloves on, I would get blisters.
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness!! So glad you found then! I'm not married/engaged but I do have a ring with diamonds that i wear. I usually leave it in the cupholder in my car. Seems like a safer bet
ReplyDeleteI have a tiny solitaire, so it isn't a major threat and the world won't end if I lose it. But I never take the set off - working out, riding, beach, whatever. I also don't wear gloves to ride, but these fit securely under my cycling gloves, so I imagine it'd be the same.
ReplyDeleteI wear mine, if I take them off I put them in a zipped pocket.
ReplyDeleteBoth of mine are flat, actually (20's art deco engagement ring) but both have numerous small diamonds, which would either get knocked out or become very dirty if worn at the barn.
ReplyDeleteSame as L., I just put in a zippered pocket, or same as the others, I leave them in my car. I also have a flat, plain, white gold band, so sometimes I just wear that and leave my fancier rings at home.
Don't feel bad, one of the ladies I boarded with lost hers while cleaning stalls...she never found it and her fiance had to buy a new ring!
ReplyDeleteYikes!! My husband accounted for my lifestyle when ring shopping, so mine is quite compact and fits easily under gloves. That said, I would either designate a place for it in a box in the tack trunk or leave it in the car. Too risky to have it laying around--I mean, what if the dogs ate it or something?
ReplyDeleteI don't wear any jewlery to the barn, including earings. If I do wear something I take it off and put it in the cup holder between the seats and typically pull something over the top so somebody can't see them. Not that anybody would break into my car out in the middle of rural nowhere, but you never know.
ReplyDeleteBack when I owned an older car I use to put them in the ashtray in the car.
I used to take mine off when I was out at the barn, but now I don't even bother. Although it's a very snug fit, it does fit underneath my gloves (mine is also a solitare - four prong setting and sits quite a ways above the band itself).
ReplyDeleteThe biggest thing I can recommend is making sure your ring is insured under your homeowner's policy (typically you have to add a rider(?) to your policy). If I were to lose mine or something were to break, I have a very small deductible to replace. Plus my diamond itself is replaceable for $1 according to warranty that came with my ring (jewelry company has a separate policy).
If I rode a lot of horses or literally lived at the barn, I probably would reevaluate my jewelry-wearing policy. As it currently stands, I just remove necklaces. My earrings are just diamond studs, so I'm not too worried about them becoming caught on something.
I'm glad you found your rings though. I would've freaked!
I leave them on my dash (with my keys, how safe is my barn?). Sometimes I ride with my ring on, but it is just a white gold band and I'm not worried about it catching on anything! I also do not wear gloves. I feel SO helpful! ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't normally wear my engagement ring, as the two rings together are too tight for my fat finger!
ReplyDeleteLeave them in your centre console in the car (or the cigarette tray that I assume you don't ash in). Safe and sound!
Right now I only have an engagement ring, and it fits okay under my gloves so I always wear it. Once I'm married and have two rings, I might have to change that because I can see them pinching together and causing issues.
ReplyDeleteI misplaced my ring once already and I nearly had a heart attack. Since then, I've adopted a policy where there is only one place I put my ring if it's off my finger. If it isn't on my finger, it's in that place always and no where else. It keeps me from wondering where I might have put my ring because I already know exactly where it is. I'll adopt the same policy for the barn if I end up not being able to wear my rings after the wedding.
I'm so glad you were able to find your rings!
Cup holder! Although, I don't always do so. Recently, when in a rush, I through them into my big satchel. Ofcourse once I was done at the barn I went to the cup holder and couldn't find them. Took me 2 days and multiple panic attacks until I finally checked my bag.
ReplyDeleteMine don't fit well under my gloves either... i normally put them on my dresser if I go home first but if not then I put them int he cup holder or my purse.
ReplyDeleteSO glad you found them! I have def "lost" mine b4 at the barn and freaked out haha!
I never wear my rings around the barn. If I leave them in the house, I have a glass jar I put them in. If I'm out and about, I put them in a small zippered section of my purse. Glad you found them! That must have been wicked stressful!

ReplyDeleteI don't wear my rings in the barn - they just aren't comfy to me with gloves on. I leave them in the house.
Good question. My mother gave me a ring to wear on my right hand recently, and the band snapped whilst I was leading a horse last week. Since then I've been wondering what I should do about my engagement ring and wedding band. I get a callous where they rub when I hold the reins but it would be awful to lose them in the arena or barn. I think what happened to you has convinced me to at least take my solitaire off and leave it in the car. Pleased you found yours, I would have been frantic!
